Darkroom Tip: Pushing Film Is Mostly Pushing Contrast
In the Darkroom · September 7, 2026
When you shoot HP5 at 1600 and extend development, you're not really gaining two stops of speed. Development can't create shadow detail that never hit the film — it mostly builds density in the mid-tones and highlights, which reads as a brighter, contrastier image.
Practical upshot: when pushing, expose for the shadows you care about (meter them and place them deliberately) and let the highlights ride. Scenes with soft, flat light push beautifully; harsh contrasty scenes get brutal.
Analogly's Roll Log tracks push/pull per roll, so at dev time you know exactly what each tank needs.
