Darkroom Tip: Agitate Like a Metronome
In the Darkroom · August 10, 2026
Agitation replenishes fresh developer at the emulsion surface — more agitation means faster, contrastier development, and uneven agitation means uneven negatives (look for surge marks streaming from the sprocket holes).
Whatever scheme you choose — the classic is 10 seconds every minute, or 5 seconds every 30 — do it identically every time: same number of inversions, same rhythm, same twist. Gentle inversions, not cocktail shaking; then a firm tap on the counter to dislodge air bells.
Analogly's Dev Timer buzzes your agitation windows so you never have to watch the clock mid-inversion.
